Thanks to Community Soup!

Last Tuesday Levenshulme Good Neighbours took part in ‘Community Soup.’ The sessions involve inviting people and groups with creative ideas that make a real difference in their communities to pitch to a community audience in different parts of the city. After enjoying some hot soup (or other delicious food!) and listening to the pitches, the audience got to vote for the projects they thought should get the funding.

Levenshulme Good Neighbours took the stand to pitch our idea for an inclusive music project, aimed at older people in our befriending service. Our idea was to create a series of bespoke music events, performed by a live band or musician for our members, which allowed our members to preselect songs from their past or present which were meaningful to them. They could be songs from a wedding, a favourite track from the 60s – or just a number that they love to dance or sing to. The ultimate aim was to create a CD of these tracks which could be gifted to our members for them to enjoy.

The room was full and the other pitches were all for equally worthy causes – which is why we were especially thankful to win 2nd prize and £2,000 of funding towards the project! We’d like to thank One Manchester for their help and the chance to pitch, and we look forward to starting the project.

People’s History Museum: Migration

This month we had another performance from the brilliant People’s History Museum. The one-woman plays highlight social issues from the past and present, and we have been using these to compliment our “memory café” sessions. The performance this time was called “Moving Histories” and it examined the topic of migration told through eyes of a… Continue Reading

You’re having a laugh…!

We celebrated this April Fool’s Day  with a very apt visit from the Laughter Clinic. Hosted by Robin Graham from Feel Good Communities, the workshop discussed the benefits and therapeutic nature of laughter, and gave us time to reflect on what makes us laugh. Did you know, simply because our physiology changes when we laugh,… Continue Reading

Befriending Story – Louise

Hear some first hand experience from one of our fantastic befrienders! I joined Levenshulme Good Neighbours when I moved to Levenshulme earlier in the year. I was new to the area, with no roots here and wanted a constructive way to use my time while settling into life in Manchester. I was paired with… Continue Reading

A Big Thanks to Summer of Lev!

We’re always humbled by the support we receive from the local community in Levenshulme, and this summer has been no exception. This July the Klondyke hosted another successful Summer of Lev weekend; a two day arts festival which raised money for Levenshulme Good Neighbours and The Circus House. The weather was glorious (mostly!) and the entertainment… Continue Reading
