‘The Hard Way Up’ – People’s History Museum

This month to kick start our “Memory Café” sessions, we welcomed a performance from the People’s History Museum. The one woman play, The Hard Way Up is based on the life and diary of suffragette and local Manchester councillor, Hannah Mitchell.

Hannah spoke out for women and for the poor, and became a peace campaigner after World War I. It was a great afternoon of entertainment and everyone enjoyed the audience participation – you can see us below rallying in support of the suffragettes! The performance also started some great conversations about voting, history  and politics, as well as the representation of women in modern society. Our members really enjoyed the session, and there was lots of enthusiasm for booking another performance. The play really got the conversation going and it was a great opportunity for members to come together and participate in a discussion. Votes for Women!
