Levenshulme Good Neighbours approached the idea of making pierogi with Polish cooking experts ‘Heart and Parcel’, with their usual enthusiasm for doing something different. Pierogi are filled dumplings of East European origin. Each person rolled out and cut their own pierogi shapes, and then filled and shaped them. There were three different types of filling: cheese and potato, meat & sauerkraut and sweet blueberries. Pierogi is traditionally a semi circular shape, but creative license in the group meant that some looked more like Cornish pasties or samosa!
Then the dumplings were cooked and served. Everyone enjoyed tasting the different types of dumplings and there were no leftovers to take home. The workshop created a buzz of conversation amongst the group about tasting food from other migrant communities present in Levenshulme, reducing barriers between communities.
